The new installation will allow to produce samples for subsequent tests – in accordance with the requirements of the modern preliminary national standard.

In 2020, a large-scale equipment upgrade is taking place in the stationary laboratories of the FAA ROSDORNIA within the framework of the national project "Safe and High-quality Roads". The new equipment will be used in the framework of quality monitoring (audit) for testing road construction materials for compliance with the requirements of existing regulatory and technical documents. We are starting a series of publications about new progressive installations and devices in detail.

The first installation is a roller (sector) sealer. It is intended for the manufacture of asphalt concrete slab samples in laboratory conditions for further testing. The sample plates are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the preliminary national standard PNST 185-2019 "Public roads. Mixtures of asphalt concrete road and asphalt concrete. Preparation of sample plates with a roller seal".

The process of compaction of the asphalt concrete mixture, simulating the passages of the rollers of the roller when compacting the mixture in real conditions, occurs by applying a vertical load to the heated mixture placed in the mold and simultaneous reciprocating motion of the mold itself. The load is applied through a heated metal sealing body shaped like a cylinder sector. The table on which the mold with the mixture is placed is also equipped with heating.

The design of the roller sealer provides for the possibility of selecting sealing modes: up to a given sample height, up to a given density, according to a given loading value, according to the number of passes of the sealing body. At the same time, the required amount of air voids is achieved in asphalt concrete samples.

The samples obtained are used for testing the resistance of asphalt concrete to track formation in accordance with the requirements of PNST 181-2019 and ODM 218.3.098-2017 (we will tell about the installation for assessing resistance to track formation in the following material). In addition, the plates can be sawn into beams, which are used for a number of tests, including flexural tensile strength and ultimate relative tensile strain, fatigue strength during repeated bending.
