On March 18, in Kursk, at the site of a thoroughly renovated construction laboratory, representatives of the FAA "ROSDORNIA" held a practical lesson for representatives of contractors and the customer service of road works on the system of volumetric and functional design. Testing of participants of road activity of the region also took place.

Kursk Region is one of the most active participants of the national project "Safe and high–quality highways". The head of the region Roman Starovoit takes a progressive position on the issue of road construction. In order to introduce new technologies in the region, the construction laboratory of the Committee of Highways was overhauled, its employees attended dozens of training seminars and practical classes to learn how to work with new equipment according to the new system.

In the Kursk region, as a pilot region for the introduction of new and best technologies, representatives of the FAA "ROSDORNIA" held a training seminar in 2019, where they spoke in detail about the introduction of methods of volumetric design of asphalt concrete - starting with how to draw up a technical specification, ending with quality control issues road works. A number of consultations were also held with key employees of the regional road administration and contractors.

The system of volumetric and functional design is a technology that should significantly increase the inter-repair service life of highways. This is another production culture aimed at improving the quality of the coating. And in order to implement it, the updated laboratory on more than 160 square meters has everything you need – for testing both the source material and for quality control of the already laid coating.

The design of the mixture includes a comprehensive assessment and testing of stone materials, the selection of the composition of the mixture and the required amount of binder. Then, in a special mixer, the test asphalt concrete is prepared and then this mixture enters the rotary sealer, which is the heart of the volumetric-functional design method. It simulates the behavior of the mixture during its packaging and compaction, and also evaluates the composition for resistance to transport load for the entire period of operation of the future pavement of the highway.

Next the stage of creating the optimal recipe for asphalt concrete mixture is to check the samples obtained on the rotary sealer for resistance to the formation of a track in a special device that simulates the track load and allows you to evaluate the real technical and operational characteristics of asphalt concrete for the entire service life of the coating.

The binders used for the preparation of the mixture also undergo a full cycle of testing, taking into account the climatic characteristics of the region and the transport load of a particular section of the highway.

All these procedures form a list of necessary parameters, which are subsequently monitored during the production of work directly on the road and thereby ensure the highest level of quality of work.

"Due attention will be paid to quality control, this is fundamental in the production of works. On the basis of the laboratory, training of contractors is carried out, training of laboratory workers is carried out. Active participation and support is provided by the Industry-wide Competence Center of the FAA "ROSDORNII". And today they are on our site and help us train our employees, contractors and check their relevant knowledge and conduct a kind of testing," said Vyacheslav Donatov, Director of the Kursk Region Committee of Highways.

"Not only the quality of the mixture itself is changing, but also the quality of control over its production and laying. But this is only part of it. In order to fully switch to extended service life, technologies for soil regeneration and stabilization will also be mastered. That is, they will be engaged in both the foundation and asphalt concrete. As for the production of asphalt concrete mixes, the Kursk Region is one of the first among the regions to radically change the approach to it," said Evgeny Damier, Adviser to the General Director of the FAA ROSDORNIA.

Before the start of the construction season, there is one more, the last stage of training – trial paving.

"It will be carried out jointly with contractors and with the support of the Industry-wide Competence Center of the FAA "ROSDORNII". The event is scheduled for May," said Andrey Koptev, head of the Laboratory Department of the Kursk Region Committee of Highways.

This year in the region within the framework of the national project "Safe and high-quality highways" 77 kilometers of highways will be repaired. And at all facilities, work will be carried out according to the system of volumetric functional design. The FAA "ROSDORNIA" will provide all the necessary consulting support.
