Intelligent transport systems (ITS) technologies will be introduced in Bangladesh for the first time

Traffic Technology Today, 14.04.2022

The Bangladesh Department of Roads and Highways has signed an 18 million USD contract with National Development Engineers Ltd (NDE) and the Chinese company FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies Co Ltd for the country's first specialized Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project.

As part of the SASEC Road Connectivity Project 2, which is funded by the Asian Development Bank, the 252 km SASEC corridor from Joydevpur to Rangpur will be managed and monitored using ITS and weight in motion (WIM) systems.

As part of ITS, LED variable message signs (VMS) will be installed on steel portals, as well as automated incident reporting, surveillance, traffic and vehicle data collection and speed determination systems, which will be integrated into the Traffic Control Center (TMC) in the division road maintenance in Dhaka. TMC managers and operators will use ITS components to manage traffic and respond to incidents and emergencies in real time.

Three axle load monitoring stations with medium-speed in-motion weighing systems (MSWIM) will also be installed. The weight and class of vehicles passing through these stations will be automatically recorded and sent to TMC. If overweight is detected, they will be automatically reported to Roads & Highways and any other relevant law enforcement agency for further verification or action.
