The width of individual traffic lanes on Russian motorways may be different. This conclusion was reached by the engineers of the Russian Road Research Institute.
The width of the leftmost lanes intended for passenger car traffic on motorways (roads for high-speed car traffic) can be narrowed from the current 3.75 to 3.5 m. This is stated in the ROSDORNIA study, which RT has reviewed.
During the study, engineers conducted experimental observations of the trajectory of cars on the M9 "Baltia" highway and on the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD).
Taking into account the fixed size of the safety gaps (the space between moving cars) and the average width of passenger cars, experts conclude that on motorways with six or more traffic lanes, the width of the leftmost lanes intended for passenger car traffic can be reduced to 3.5 m.
At the same time, the speed and safety of traffic will not change, the authors of the work note.
Scientists also add that the width of the extreme right lanes, where the movement of freight vehicles prevails means must remain at the existing level (at least 3.75 m).
According to engineers, reducing the width of the left lane will help save significant funds during the construction of highways and the expansion of the expressway network in the country.
In the fall of 2018, the Ministry of Transport proposed to change the color of the road markings. The Federation of Car Owners supported this idea.
