The Marshall sealer and the rotary asphalt concrete mix sealer (gyrator) make it possible to produce samples of a qualitatively new level.

In 2020, a large-scale upgrade of equipment is taking place in the stationary laboratories of the FAA ROSDORNIA within the framework of the national project "Safe and High-quality Roads". The new equipment will be used as part of quality monitoring for testing road-building materials for compliance with the requirements of existing regulatory and technical documents. We tell you about the installations and devices in detail.

In 2019 and 2020, new national standards for asphalt concrete mixtures entered into force. These standards impose stricter requirements on both the starting materials and the grain composition of the mixtures – the most compact arrangement of the particles of stone material in the coating layer is provided, a rigid mineral "frame" is formed, the road eventually lasts longer. The new national standards contain methods for the manufacture of samples, as well as test methods for such mixtures.

Within the framework of the old technology, which has not changed in principle since Soviet times, the compaction of asphalt concrete mixture is carried out on hydraulic presses by applying a vertical load of 40 MPa. As a result, crushed stone grains are crushed in laboratory samples. Subsequently, in order to achieve the same compaction indicators, grain crushing occurs on the road. The methods of manufacturing samples according to the new national standards are devoid of such a disadvantage.

Rotary asphalt sealer (gyrator) designed for the preparation of asphalt concrete samples in accordance with GOST R 58401.13-2019 "Public roads. Mixtures of asphalt concrete road and asphalt concrete. Method of preparation of samples by a rotary sealer".

Rotational compaction technology involves pressing a sample of asphalt concrete mixture enclosed in a cylindrical shape, while simultaneously applying vertical static pressure and a shear action that occurs due to the rotation of the mold along an inclined axis. Crushing of crushed stone grains does not occur, compaction of asphalt concrete mixture is simulated with a different number of roller passes. All data is measured and recorded during the test.

The obtained samples-cylinders with a diameter of 100 mm or 150 mm are then used to determine the qualitative characteristics of the asphalt concrete mixture.

A feature of the gyrator is the electromechanical load drive, which provides the highest operational characteristics and reliability. The angle of inclination of the applied load during compaction is adjusted by the user using the software.

The automatic Marshall sealer is designed for the preparation of samples from asphalt concrete mix with a diameter of 100 and 150 mm in accordance with GOST 58406.9-2019 "Public roads. Mixtures of asphalt concrete road and asphalt concrete. Method of preparation of samples with a Marshall seal".

The essence of the method consists in compacting the heated asphalt concrete mixture in cylindrical forms with a hammer on both sides. The machine automatically compacts the sample and stops after the specified number of strokes is completed. A consistent and uniform degree of compaction is ensured.

All moving parts are protected by a protective shield that automatically stops the seal when the door is opened, and the control panel is equipped with a red emergency stop button.

The Marshall automatic sealer consists of a frame with a steel anvil, a steel square plate on which the mold is fixed, and a stand.
