ROSDORNII took part in the work of the UNECE expert group

Mikhail Ivannikov, Head of the Data Processing and Analysis Department at ROSDORNII FAA, and Svetlana Yurina, a leading specialist, took part in the 21st session of the Expert Group on Assessing the Effects of Climate Change on Inland Transport and Adaptation to Them (WP.5/GE.3) The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The experts presented the Russian experience, developments and plans of the Institute in terms of solving the problems of the impact of climate change on the road industry. 

In his report, Mikhail Ivannikov noted the importance of timely measures to adapt transport infrastructure to climate change. The expert paid special attention to work in permafrost areas. In particular, an analysis of the comparability of the length of winter roads and paved roads was presented. To date, 22 regions have winter roads and ice crossings with a length of 60.5 to 8 thousand km.

The report presented the information collected by the Institute over the past five years on dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena on the territory of Russia, which entailed socio-economic costs (including in the road sector), highlighted the directions ROSDORNIA's activities in terms of the ecology of road activity and its adaptation to climate change.

The work of the Institute's representatives in the expert group was noted by the UNECE Secretariat. Experts from Canada expressed interest in cooperation with ROSDORNIA and in joint work on the development of transport infrastructure in permafrost areas, as well as in finding solutions to overcome its degradation.

In mid-November 2021, ROSDORNII, together with the UNECE, will hold an international conference in Moscow on assessing the effects of climate change on inland transport. Many participants of the session expressed their willingness to take part in it.
