Asia-Pacific Countries to Set up Integrated Transport Network

The Secretariat of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) presented its interactive Asia-Pacific Transport Network (APTN) platform displaying the current state and potential evolving of the region-wide ground transport network, as well as information on major routes and important nodes.

Currently APTN platform covers data on 145,000 km of the Asian Highway Network across 32 countries, 118,000 km of the Trans-Asian Railway Network in 28 countries, 269 dry ports of international importance throughout 27 countries, as well as information on maritime ports.

Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation plays a leading role in shaping the transport agenda of ESCAP. The Trans-Asian Railway Network includes the Trans-Siberian Railway connecting the European part of Russia with largest East Siberian and Far Eastern industrial cities and enabling freight traffic flow from East Asia to Europe. Also, International North-South Transport Corridor runs through Russia to connect Northern Europe with Persian Gulf countries.

The APTN platform is designed to facilitate regional cooperation on an integrated sustainable transport system in the Asia and the Pacific, enhance transport infrastructure and its performance, advance environmentally sustainable transport systems and services, and promote safe and inclusive transport and mobility.

The event was attended by experts of our Institute, while Alexander Nesvetailov and Vitaly Nikiforov, employees of Department for International Ties, provided simultaneous interpretation of the Session. Nowadays, ROSDORNII is fostering cooperation with key road sector institutions in India, South Africa, Vietnam and other countries.
