Ritmeurasia

25.01.2022

In Kyrgyzstan, the topic of construction of the Almaty–Issyk-Kul highway was raised again. On November 13, 2021, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the country Aziz Aliyev and Director of the Permanent Mission of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the Kyrgyz Republic Lao-Araya Kanopkan discussed the issue of promoting the project within the framework of the public-private partnership "Alternative Road Almaty–Issyk-Kul".

According to the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Almaty-Issyk–Kul alternative road project has not just been presented, but technical, financial, economic and other aspects of its implementation have already been discussed. The ADB is ready to support this project. A. Aliyev stressed the importance of implementing this project and thanked the ADB representatives for their support.

The authorities of the republic are confident that the road connecting the city of Almaty (Kazakhstan) and the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan will become an additional factor of cooperation between the peoples of the two countries, since it will reduce the time and cost of travel, which will lead to an increase in the frequency of mutual trips. The new highway, according to officials, "is intended to become an instrument of regional economic development, as it can lead to an increase in tourist flow and stimulate investment." "The project will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the tourism, transport and trade potential of the country. The Cabinet of Ministers will provide all possible assistance in its implementation," the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers assured and instructed state agencies to carry out work on the early launch of construction.

The objectives of the Almaty–Issyk-Kul highway project in a more detailed plan are: development of the transport potential of the Kyrgyz Republic; further deepening and development of trade and economic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, as well as between China and Kazakhstan using the Almaty-Kemin–Kuvaki–Naryn–Torugart transport corridor; reduction of cargo and passenger delivery time; development of tourism.

Currently, ADB experts are considering three options for a new highway (western, straight and eastern), which differ from each other in length, complexity of engineering structures, the presence of high mountain passes and environmental impact.
