Since 2009, since the launch of the North-South highway construction program, which covers 556 km, and to this day, a section with a length of only 31 km has been built, which is over 5% of the total mileage of the road.

At the same time, according to the Ministry of Finance, since 2009 the Armenian government has concluded 3 loan agreements with international partners for the implementation of this program.

The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure is still having difficulty answering the question about the timing of the completion of the highway. Nevertheless, the program for the construction of the North-South highway is planned to be completed after 6-7 years.

The project to create a North-South transport corridor with a total length of 556 km will provide access to the Black Sea and European countries through the territory of Armenia (Meghri-Kapan-Goris-Yerevan-Ashtarak-Gyumri-Bavra) and Georgia. The investment program is aimed at connecting the north (the border with Georgia) and the south of Armenia (the border with Iran) through transport communications that meet high international standards and access to world markets. The construction of the corridor was originally planned to be completed in 2019.

Georgian companies will have easier access to infrastructure projects in Armenia

Sputnik Georgia

24.01.2022

According to the law adopted by the Armenian Parliament last week, foreign companies from a number of countries engaged in construction and quality control of construction works, examination of construction documents and engineering design works will be able to participate in tenders held in Armenia in a simplified manner.

This benefit applies to the countries of the EAEU and the European Union, Britain, the USA and Canada, China, South Korea and Japan, the Arab Emirates, Georgia and Iran,

Companies from these countries will be allowed to participate in tenders even if their countries (unlike Armenia) do not require a license for these types of activities.

This procedure is being adopted in order to facilitate the access of foreign companies to large-scale construction works that are planned in the coming years in the Syunik region in the south of Armenia.

In particular, it is planned to build a continuation of the North-South road here, which will significantly speed up communication between Yerevan and the south of Armenia, as well as in the future connect Iran and the Gulf countries with the Black Sea ports and Russia. To do this, it is planned to build a number of complex tunnels and bridges.
