Kyrgyzstan is preparing for the opening of the North-South highway
Regnum, 08.10.2021
Construction of the second part of the alternative North-South road in Kyrgyzstan is being completed.
In the second phase, roads in the mountains were built from scratch — the highway was laid in the Kabaka gorge along the Naryn River and along the Kokomeren River. Two overpass bridges over the Naryn River have also been built. The length of the first bridge is 1076 meters, the second is 396 meters. According to the project, the structures must withstand an earthquake of up to 9 points.
The total length of the alternative North-South road is 433 kilometers.
We remind you that since 2013, Kyrgyzstan has been implementing a project to build an alternative highway "North — South" worth $850 million, which should connect the northern and southern regions of the republic. The loan for the construction of the highway was allocated by China, the contractors were China Road and Bridge Corporation and Todini Costruzioni Generali. S.P.A.It is planned that this road will create a transit corridor along the route Russia — Kazakhstan — Kyrgyzstan — Tajikistan.
Previously, it was assumed that the road would be opened in the summer of 2021. At the moment, the only highway connecting the north and south of Kyrgyzstan is the Bishkek — Osh road. In winter, driving along the highway is difficult due to avalanches. There is no railway running inside the country and connecting the northern and southern regions.
